Skype

Ok, to be honest I'm not new to skype...I've been using it for about 6 months now and wanted to make sure the shit works nicely. Well, I think it's ready for primetime...now that it works on my Axim too (yeah, I'm blown away by the ability to use skype on my PDA) I think I'll publish it now.

I'm on skype as thealmightypyro. But seriously, IM me before you call me on that...I usually don't wear my headset 24/7...

Hmm...

After reading my last posts (well, probably all of them) you likely think I'm a complete asshole who does nothing but whine...well...you're half right...I *am* an asshole :)

Well, it's a new week, so blah. I don't have anything to bitch about anyway, but I found out something kinda cool.

I was gonna buy a proxim orinoco card for my laptop, so I could do some serious wardriving/hacking with other ppl's wireless networks. Well, my renewed interest is because of a piece of software called FakeAP. If you know what this is, I don't need to say any more, but for those who don't...well, FakeAP is just a world of fun waiting to happen...IF you have a card that supports monitor mode (RFMON), which the Intel 2200BG in my laptop doesn't (yet). Plus, everyone says that the Proxim Orinoco cards are the absolute best for doing this kinda um...work. Well anyway, I was playing with the orinoco_cs driver and it may be the case that I can use an old airport card I have lying around. It's only 802.11b, but if all I wanna do is crank out frames and listen for frames, I don't really need a card capable of g. Since I can assemble the frames in software, the only thing stopping it from being a G card is the hardware to efficiently drive the traffic at 54Mbps as opposed to 11. So, I'm kinda stoked about it. It's the first time I've ever considered a macintosh to provide me some use...although I still have apprehensions about shoving mac hardware into my virgin Linux box. I'm not sure my computer will ever recover from the trauma of that kinda thing. It's had awhile to get used to the foul stench of the Windows XP partition on it, so maybe that will keep it sane.

Anyway, since I had nothing to "whine" about as some of you put it, I thought I'd share this!

And another thing

I am so sick of hearing about the damn pope! He's just the goddamn pope. He isn't god, he isn't jesus, he's just a man in high favor with the people who already have power in the catholic church. Enough people...I should not bomb a structure quiz because I can't remember the verb for "to elect" in japanese because sensei wants to make us say something about the damn pope!

And where the fuck is the latest episode of Naruto!? I need my anime fix, dammit.
(UPDATE: I found it, no thanks to tt...l'il shits didn't list it so I had to get it from the tracker homepage)

South Park is starting to get really disturbing.

Tom goes to the mayor is RETARDED.

AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH

This week has been (and still is) an unholy fucking nightmare! I woke up this morning, and had this urge to beat the shit out of a hobo. Don't ask me why I want to direct my rage at bums...it's a long story. I need to write more often...I can't remember shit.

Monday. I had a quiz in japanese which I know I fucked...hard. Homework too, which didn't get done. Not to mention my second draft of my essay was due...also in japanese. Fuck. Then I had to get some work done for my 436 project. It gets worse. I had to stay on campus until 11 at fucking night to get my algorithms homework done. Of course the 3 pages attached to the main page with my solutions to the last 3 problems got lost, so I have to do those over and run them to the TA's office hours. Grr...

Tuesday. Went to work at my "other" job. Boring as shit, and I don't reeeealy wanna talk about it. Again a quiz in japanese. Didn't do well on this one either. Actually, I didn't do this one at all. I just plain didn't feel like doing it after the night I'd had. Fine. This is all well and good, because now I've got to make tracks to my 436 class (zzz) and then run across campus to my algorithms class to turn in my homework. I had a shitload of work to do, so I skipped the 436 meeting. So at work I've got 2 new computers that have just arrived, and an extra monitor. The monitor was a complete duh, no sweat there. The next was a new computer (a PC) for a lifelong (well, worklife anyway) crapintosh user. Everything went off without a hitch. Except for the one thing which the users can't seem to live without...their email and addresses. This isn't too unreasonable, I mean...it's a pain in the ass even for me to remember everyone's email address. So I figure I'll set her up with Thunderbird/Firefox; my preferred internet duo. I get all the shit set up and go to export the email on her mac. Well, she's using entourage. The fucking program has no way to export email. I figure I might as well just export the addresses for now and deal with the emails later. So I export the addresses, and nothing on the PC will read the things because the mac is a motherfucking piece of shit! I decide to wait on that and try to get the emails across. I figure I'll load em into her UA email account via IMAP, but of course...she has WAY too much shit to put her WAY over quota. So there is no simple way to get this shit installed and set up. I grep google for over an hour, and everything I find doesn't do dick unless you pay for it. I just need to use it ONCE. I never plan to use any of this shit again...just once. I put the addresses on hold and decide to set up an unquota'd IMAP server on my desktop at work. It's already 5:30, so I lock up and go home. At this point I need to work on my 436 assignment, so I do that until about 1 AM and go to bed.

Wednesday. I wake up with a splitting headache...I can already tell that this is not going to be a good day. Well, at least I don't have to go to my "other" job for another few weeks. I get into work kinda early, so I get back to work on the mail problem. I fight with the IMAP setup for a few hours, and give up to get back to it later. I go to Japanese class. Another quiz, another shitty grade. Yeah, whatever...old news. I've checked out...we just finished chapter 10. No more new stuff to learn. Fan-fucking-tastic. Good news though today...my brand fucking new GeForce 6600GT arrived via FedEx. So I ran over to the hospital and pick the thing up from my office. Well...I knew I didn't have time to go home anyway and play with it, but anyone who knows me knows how I am with new tech. Anyway, I have to run back down to campus post haste to get to networking class. We get an assignment due next Wednesday, and find out that, oh, there's a test on wednesday too. In addition to the incredibly difficult assignment already due Friday. Great. Well, class over, so I go back to work to work in the IMAP problem some more. I have to get back to campus for a 5pm meeting to work on the networking assignment with my teammate on the assignment. We decide to hit Pei Wei for some food. We work on networking until 9pm for the 436 meeting...we get nowhere, long story short. I don't get home until midnight, and decide I can spare about 20 minutes to play Doom 3 on my new card. Well, hard drive is having problems, so I had to spend a good 2 hours fixing this from teh recovery console. At this point I'm just too fucking tired, so I go to bed.

Thursday (today, kinda). I get up, and I'm too fucking wrecked to even walk. I get a shower, somehow end up at work with serious caffeine withdrawal, and decide to take the morning off while I get some sleep in the medical library at the hospital. Well, people won't stop calling me on my cell, so I give up on that after an hour. I print up the notes I need for my 436 test, and head off to my Japanese class. More homework due that I ignore because I just don't have time for it. At least there wasn't a quiz... Anyway, I get through that class somehow, and BOMB my 436 test. Fucking hell. After this, I have to almost scream at my 436 team because I am NOT going to go to another 9pm meeting. I'm just not. So I skip algorithms as usual, and head back to work to resume work on my IMAP problem. I'm there for all of 20 minutes before I get a call from one of my bosses telling me that one of the users is pissed and complaining because like everyone else she thinks she deserves to be prioritized above everyone else because she's too rough with her laptop and a key fell off, and things are taking too long because the CATS have kicked back 2 IBFs with wrong amounts on them...amounts that THEY quoted me. So, I finally get somewhere with my IMAP problem...logins now work. I can't create mailboxes now for some reason...I'm using cyrus4 if anyone has suggestions. So I think I need to play with the ACLs for the login. Why can't there be an IMAP server that can just be pointed at a mbox or maildir containing directory and just fucking WORK??? This is linux...there should be simple tools for things like this. Well, 5pm comes around, and I am going the hell home. Turns out today is my alleged father's birthday. I only remember it because my Citibank bill is due on the 21st of the month. So I waste about an hour shopping with my mother looking for a gift for him. Eventually, she decides to just stiff him...something I had planned to do from the beginning. The bastard can kiss my ass if he thinks he's getting anything from me. Maybe for my birthday he'll just off himself. Anyway, finally get home, get some work done on my 436 project, and get even more bad news. Well, the instructor (for networking) realizes the problem with the framework we have to implement our program in. We get an extension until monday for the assignment, but we have to do more work. How nice. I finally get around to playing some Doom 3 with my new video card. I love this game all over again.

Friday (now). Well, I had originally planned to ditch japanese today. We get 5 freebie absences which don't count against us, and I might as well use them if nothing is due and we're just fucking off in class anyway. Well, turns out that we're getting our oral exams scheduled, so now I have to go, or I get another 7 am slot for my interview like last time. At least this time I have my good friend Jack (if you don't get this one, ask me) to help me out with my Japanese. If the bottle lasts that long, that is... At least on Fridays we get the nice looking sensei :)

So, that about wraps it up. My life is falling apart around me, and I don't have time to fix the problems that are cropping up minute by minute, let alone the ones that need to be fixed so I can resist the urge to wail on indigents. The next freeloading asshole hobo that asks me for anything is gonna run in fear of my mental state. I think I feel frustrated right now, but that is one hell of a fucking understatement.

Laptop Power Adapters

I just found a Kensington 120 Watt adapter for my Inspiron 5150 at Compusa. The thing said it supports "Inspiron" on the back. SO I buy it...100 bucks. I get it home (I literally RACE home because I've been looking for something like this...for like...forever. I open the package, and it doesn't fucking work. This is the 3rd time this has happened. I've sent emails and letters to Kensington about this. I've heard nothing back, and it looks like my complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

They've lost me as a customer...I've had enough.

Gentle Ben's

Anyone else having problems with them lately?

I was there today...it took 20 minutes to get our drinks...we gave up eventually and left. I don't think I'm gonna go back there...though I will miss the original beer selection they have.

Damn I've been lazy

Wow. I need to post more often. Well, actually I've been kinda busy lately, so I haven't posted recently. Well, this post is actually going to be a bit back-dated, so it doesn't look like I'm *quite* so lazy :)

Anyway, I've been working on my network at home. Since I find out that WEP can be cracked in less than 3 minutes using a variety of techniques, I decide to move my home network AP1 (its a WAP54G) from 128-bit WEP to WPA. Given that I don't wanna deal with RADIUS, I just used a PSK with TKIP. Not the best, but better than WEP. So the "alleged father" bought the cheapest wireless card he could get his hands on awhile back. Not suprisingly, it only supports WEP. Oh, and just to make things fun, *his* company doesn't support Windows XP or Linux, or something with decent WPA support, just Windows 2000. For christ sake, my fucking Axim supports WPA using TKIP natively (well, it supports everything when I toss Linux on it and use wpa_supplicant, but that's for another time) and even supports WPA-PSK/AES with the Odyssey client...even Cisco LEAP/PEAP stuff works on that thing... Anyway, he throws a big shit fit because all of the sudden, he's the *only* one who can't get online. I have no idea why I put up with these people. I'm going to laugh my ass off when I move out and none of them can put this network back together. No way in hell I'm leaving my Linux router or any of my other servers behind...

My PVR project has also suffered catastrophic failure. The machine I'm running it on (or wanted to anyway) is too underpowered to run MythTV with decent quality, and I don't want to buy another card with a hardware MPEG2 encoder on board. I'm not buying any more TV cards. Well, that's a lie...I'm gonna buy an HDTV wonder sometime in June before they start making them with support for that retarded broadcast bit flag thing...I can already see this is a DMCA nightmare just waiting to happen, and I'd rather not have to take a soldering iron to a PCB just so I can do as I please with my hardware that I've purchased.

(aside) For those of you not in the loop, the broadcast flag in HDTV content could effectively prevent you from using your TV to record the content, thusly preventing things like recording it on a timer (so you don't HAVE to stay up till 2 AM to catch a show) or skipping commercials, and even "live TV" capability altogether. But, the big studios have money, and they've purchased several people in our government to keep in their pockets, so now EE's will be able to get girlfriends again by modding TV's to break broadcast flags. Actually, more likely software guys will get girls because the fix is much easier to break by snooping the framebuffer on a computer with one of these HDTV cards...well, it won't be a problem with PCIX, but AGP will definitely have an issue with that kind of traffic on the bus.

Anyway (damn I have a short attention span!) I scrapped the idea for now, and just put XP on one of my older machines I had laying around. Gotta give props to Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com) for his awesome XP services guide. At least it can use the MPEG encoder on my old 8500DV. Oh, yes...MythTV (well, Linux in general) has a problem with the driver for the 8500DV because it doesn't completely implement the V4L API like the bttv driver does for my TVWonder and that Hauppage (how the fuck do ya pronounce that!?) card I have laying around. 3-tuner Linux PVR would have been nice, but...I guess its back to driver writing for me if I want this to work :(

So I try it with the ATI sotfware, which is ya know, decent for what I'm gonna use a TV for, but I lost my original disk! So I can't install the program guide component of my setup. After an hour on the phone with ATI who told me I can either give them more money or just take it up the tailpipe and put up with using TVGuide or some hacked together xmltv solution with no TV integration. How nice... So I grabbed a copy of ShowShifter (from their website, completely legal! Really! *looks around for TLA's*) Aside from some minor bugs in the program guide and some speed issues, its a nice piece of software. They're system requirements for the software are seriously inflated though. I'm running it with nice sucess using a P3-500/256M PC100 with a Radeon 8500DV. They almost turned me off the software because my PVR machine didn't meet the req's for the application. The cool thing is, I don't need any of the ATI software to run ShowShifter...even the remote works. Needless to say I'm pretty impressed with it. Check it out if you have the time.

Oh, and I also found out that my OpenVPN certificate expired at home. Now I need to regenerate my cert so I can connect to my work VPN again...I wonder if anyone else has certs that are gonna expire soon...well, as long as they expire after June 30th...hehe

Ok, I'm done. I'll edit if I left anything out.

Linksys Support

So, I decide that I want to split my home network up into 2 discrete networks. Call them N1 and N2 for now. So N1 is my current setup: one router, a switch, an AP, a bunch of nodes assigned via DHCP. Pretty simple. I decide for various reasons that I want to segregate some of the equipment like print servers and the AP on the N2 network. I don't need to do this for any reason, but I'm bored and running out of room on my switch.

So I dig the old Linksys BEFSR41 from the closet (I bought this thing before I had a cool Linux box doing my routing) and set it up to route traffic between the 2 subnets, letting it be the N2 gateway and forward all needed services to my N1 gw, like DNS, AD, etc. So I get it all set up and routing, i have good connectivity, and RIPv2 (tho I have no intention of actually using it in a 2 router network) even works, score! Well, guess what doesn't work? DHCP. I can do everything on the N2 net except DHCP.

So I get Linksys on the phone, and the nice Indian (dot, not feather) man named "Bob" (yeah, they need to talk to the Dell people...grr) tells me that when I switch the router into "router" mode, it disables the DHCP entirely. They put this in the firmware because idiot users were playing with the router and fucking up their settings, and they wanted to decrease the call volume on the issue. So, after I finish laughing, I ask him what I can do about it. He tells me to downgrade my firmware on the router. Now, anyone who's worked with linksys equipment knows that you can't do this...the firmware won't let you. I remind him of this, and he's like "you should buy a new router, because yours is defective." I tell him there is nothing wrong with the thing, then he tries to convince me that I'm doing it wrong, and he'll walk me through how to set up my network. I figure, what's the harm...it doesn't work to a useful state as it is anyway. Can you guess what he wanted me to do? He walked me through plugging everything into the LAN side of the router. Yep, he had me reduce my router to a switch. A switch. When I asked him why, he told me that what I wanted to do what impossible, and this was the next best thing.

I asked to speak to someone who does the engineering work on their firmware. He transferred me to a dead end...that is, a line that goes nowhere.

If you someday happen to read this, Linksys, fire that buttfucker...you just lost a customer because of the stupidity of your offshored technical support.
